Definitions of Green IT

Together with the drive by most governments and non-profit organizations, the IT industry is now realizing the importance of ecologically sustainable solutions. Green IT, or otherwise known as Green computing is the concept of the development of computer hardware and software system with minimal impact on the environment.

Although Green IT is now a hot topic in 2010 to lead its roots in the early 90s, in 1992, the Energy Star program by the “U.S. Environmental Protection Agency started.” This program encourages new electronic equipment to more energy efficiency by reducing energy consumption, efficient design and the reduced use of hazardous materials. The “Energy Star “program was revising in 2006 and now contains much more stringent requirements for efficiency, and a tiered ranking system for approval.

The recent attention to green IT technologies and new career prospects for IT professionals, since some of the areas that require attention, such as energy efficiency, environmental laws and ethical management is specialized; some companies have created new agencies and departments to embrace in the coming trend.

There are several organizations active in promoting environmentally sustainable IT systems. Some examples are Green Computing Impact Organization (GCIO), Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI) and Green Electronics Council.

Building green IT systems come with an additional cost. These systems should be conduct in accordance with the overall short-and long-term sustainability, the total cost of ownership and the cost for the safe recycling and disposal. However, when used with efficient and effective actions that can be much greater return on investment for the organization, employees and the community.
